A blistering collaboration between Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, Afternoon Saints’s David Watson and The Necks’ Tony Buck, there’s a sense from the very beginning that Glacial is just that little bit special. Building from a mire of Ranaldo’s long-respected guitar drones, Ton Buck’s virtuoso rhythms slowly come to life in amongst a burst of synthesizer and what sounds like bagpipes? The cacophony comes across like the best of ESP’s varied catalogue, but is brought into check by the veteran minds at work. ‘On Jones Beach’ is far from a mere exercise, or just a simple jam session -this is a well realized, powerful explosion of ideas and life performed by musicians who simply put, are at the best form of their careers. Well good.
