A bridging release between the Matador issuing of Childish Prodigy and Kurt Vile's forthcoming album, recorded with (Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr. producer) John Agnello, Square Shells is a splendid little collection of odds and ends. 'Ocean City' is top notch, ramshackle acoustic folk-pop a la Beck and gets the EP off to a great start, although it all gets a little weird from here onwards: 'Invisibility Nonexistent' is a lo-fi, drawn out dirge that orbits around DIY drum machine patter and a homemade kosmische feel, while next up 'Losing Momentum For Jim Jarmusch' goes all Loren Connors via its somnambulant guitar-scape. It's the more conventional songs that prove most essential though, with 'Hey Now I'm Movin' channelling the astral blues of Jason Pierce and 'I Know I Got Religion' dropping all effects and other such weirdness in favour of four-and-a-half-minutes of compelling, bluesy modern folk.
