Changelog, comments and new logo

Written

Old logo had to go. New logo is simple and not at all stolen from or inspired by Pitchfork :)

Some users have asked for a way to comment on posts. We're now trying out the Disqus commenting system on all detail pages. Consider this beta, there is no guarantee that it will be kept as it is today. Anonymous commenting on the web is a minefield, but let's see how it goes...

The existing About page was really just a changelog. There's now a proper About page and a separate changelog.

Testing new design

Written

Jonnablaze has provided a brand new design! And there's a new feedback button and some other minor tweaks and fixes. More updates coming soon.

Limited availability

Spotify is currently officially available in 6 countries: Finland, France, UK, Norway, Spain, Sweden. Due to technical and legal issues, not all albums will be available in all the supported countries. This means that sometimes a user of Pitchify clicks on a newly added album only to find out it is not playable in Spotify in his/hers region. No fun at all.

To help avoiding frustration, Pitchify has now been updated to show which countries an album is available in. It will also try to find alternative versions of the same album (if this improves its availability). An example of this is the new Charlotte Gainsbourg album, which is available in the UK but in a different version than the rest of Europe.

This update will initially affect only newly added albums, but I'm working on an automatic job that checks availability on all the older albums as well. New albums that are available in all supported countries will show up just as before, with no flags og territories indicated.

Huge thanks to Mark G. and others for suggesting this change, I hope this makes the site easier to use.

Adding tags and short descriptions

Just a quick note to let you know that the details page has been slightly redesigned. It does now include genre/style tags and short descriptions for most albums. These are automatically fetched from AllMusic and Amazon. Not all tags will be correct, and some of them might be a bit redundant, but overall they should give an impression of what to expect of the album.

For now, the tags are not clickable, but I am working on finding a good solution to allow searching and filtering. Bye, now!

Now using reviews from Drowned In Sound

The very nice people of Drowned In Sound (DiS) have given me permission to use their reviews on Pitchify! This means that Pitchify will be updated more frequently and offer a wider variety of choice (and also have a name that no longer make sense...)
The parsing algorithm has been updated to go something like this: If an album has received a review of at least 8 out of 10 on either Pitchfork or DiS, it will be added to Pitchify as soon as it is available on Spotify. For now I will leave the rss feed as it is, it will serve reviews from both sources combined.

If anyone out there with an eye for design would like to help me improve the appearance of the site, please let me know on: admin at pitchify dot youknowwhat

PS: DiS' weekly Spotify playlists (Spotifriday) are highly recommended, give them a try here.

Minor update + older albums

All Spotify links are now Spotify URIs in stead of http links (which means you won't get the dead re-direct web page any more). Thanks to http://twitter.com/Rsms for suggesting this.

About 130 albums with very good reviews from the period 2003 - 2008 have been added. I used the actual date of the review when fetching these, so they won't show up in the rss feed.

The "suggest" button has been changed to "similar", as some people thought this was an option for submitting artist/band requests.

Oh, and merry christmas everyone!

New stuff

FUN! Thanks to an article and some tweeting by afront of The Pansentient League, a lot of people discovered this site today. Some even left really good suggestions on improvements, so I decided to roll out a new version. The RSS feed should be up and running now. I have also set up a "similar" feature that allows you to input an artist or a band, and get a list of similar or related bands/artists in return. All results courtesy of tastekid. Oh, and the tastekid results just link to Spotify queries, so no guarantee for the artists actually being on Spotify. Yup!

It's alive

As a Pitchfork fan I was getting tired of manually looking up Spotify links for the best reviews, so I made this small mashup automating the process. I hope someone else finds it useful as well. Any bugs or suggestions may be tweeted or sent using the "Give feedback" in the upper right corner.
